The Batabi plant, commonly known as the Pomelo, or Citrus maxima, is a large, evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. Historically, it is considered an ancestor of many citrus fruits. The tree features large, glossy leaves and fragrant white blossoms. A mature tree can grow to a considerable size, providing both a generous yield of fruit and ample shade.
The plant’s most notable feature is its fruit, the largest of all citrus. The pomelo has a round to pear shape with a very thick, spongy rind. Its pale green or yellow skin can be easily peeled to reveal a segmented pulp inside. The flesh is pale pink or yellow and has a mild, sweet, and juicy flavor much less acidic than a grapefruit, making it very refreshing.
Pomelo trees thrive in tropical and subtropical climates, requiring full sun and well-drained soil. They are relatively easy to grow. The fruit is primarily enjoyed fresh, with its thick rind making it simple to segment. The rind is also sometimes candied or used to make marmalade, showcasing the plant’s versatility and value as a major fruit crop.
